Laser engraving and marking metal: process guide

A machine that removes paint from coated metal is not automatically engraving bare metal. Alloy, finish, desired depth and mark appearance define the process.

Name the actual interaction

Marking, annealing, engraving, deep engraving and coating removal are different outcomes. Write the required result before comparing power tiers. For coated or plated products, document both the surface layer and the base metal.

A diode claim for coated metal should not be presented as bare-metal fiber capability. Likewise, an attractive MOPA color sample does not prove repeatability on another stainless batch.

Control the station

Open Class 4 or high-hazard workflows need a site-specific controlled-area assessment, training, interlocks/barriers where required and wavelength-specific protective controls. Generic eyewear is not a substitute for the manual or competent assessment.

Capture fumes at source and do not process unknown platings or coatings.
